PASAJES Con esta su segunda incursión en el mundo de la realización de largometrajes, Calparsoro continúa su exploratoria del lado duro y desesperanzado de la realidad urbana que produce una juventud marginada y maquinadora. Gabi (Najwa Nimri) es una joven ladrona que subsiste en una pandilla perennemente esquivando a la policía. En este cortante medioambiente, Gabi se las arregla para llevar la voz cantante, ejerciendo un raro control sobre sus amigotes. Pero Gabi encuentra a Carmina (Charo López), una alcohólica desempleada, y decide convertirla en la mujer de sus sueños -- alguien que llene los vacíos de su existencia insensata y le brinde calor humano, un techo, la sensación de pertenecer en esta vida. Gabi la convierte en amante, cómplice, y a veces mamá. Los personajes de Calparsoro son seres aparentemente deshumanizados que no obstante se inventan un mundo propio, donde crean un refugio imaginario, en medio de un implacable deterioro industrial. La electricidad del mundo de Gabi la generan sus propios pobladores. Es una juventud enérgica, viviendo con todos sus sentidos, pero también vacía y sin futuro. Calparsoro crea este universo sórdido y enloquecedor con lujo de detalles. Pero al mismo tiempo nos brinda una velada nota de esperanza en el poder de la imaginación como un método para dar la lucha en el mundo brutalmente cruel en que vivimos. |
PASSAGES This is Daniel Calparsoro's second plunge in the world of feature filmmaking, where he continues his exploration of the hard and hopeless side of urban reality which produces an alienated and manipulative youth. Gabi (Najwa Nimri) is a girl thief subsisting in a gang that is forever escaping the police. In this hard-edged medium, Gabi finds a way of taking the lead, exercising a rare control over her pals. But Gabi finds Carmina (Charo López), an unemployed alcoholic cleaning woman, and decides to transform her into the woman of her dreams -- someone who will fill the voids of her senseless existence and bring her nearer to human warmth, a roof over her head, the feeling of belonging. Gabi turns her into her lover, accomplice, even mother. Calparsoro's characters are beings apparently dehumanized, who nonetheless opt for inventing their own world, where they create an imaginary refuge from the advancing stages of industrial decadence. In Gabi's world, its inhabitants generate their own electricity. These are young people living intensely with all of their senses, but still empty and without a future. Calparsoro creates this sordid, maddening universe in painstaking detail. But at the same time he transmits a veiled note of hope in the power of imagination as a method for survival in a brutally cruel world. |

Daniel Calparsoro Nace en San Sebastián en 1968. Estudia arte y cine en Nueva York de 1989 a 1993. Dirige varios videos musicales en Madrid y Nueva York, y cortometrajes, entre ellos Sídrome Rufus, La playa y W.C. (premiado en Houston). Su primer largometraje, Salto al vacío (PRIFF 95), fue premiado en los festivales de Bogotá, Cádiz, y escogido en la selección oficial de Berlín. |
Daniel Calparsoro Born in San Sebastian in 1968. Studied art and cinema in New York from 1989 to 1993, and directed several musical videos and shorts, among them Sindrome Rufus, La playa and W.C. (recipient of an award in Houston). His first feature, Jump Into the Void (PRIFF 95), was an award winner in Bogotá and Cádiz, and one of the official selections in Berlin. |
