ENTRE MARX Y UNA MUJER DESNUDA En los años 60 la juventud pensaba que podía cambiar el mundo. Por lo menos en ciertas partes del mundo. No precisamente en Quito, Ecuador, en cuya época ocurre la acción de Entre Marx y una mujer desnuda, donde cuatro personajes, Galo Gálvez (Arístides Vargas), su prometida Margaramaría, el Autor y Rosana se descuartizan en una de esas batallas entre sexo y política a las que nos tenía acostumbrados Lina Wertmüller. Galo es un intelectual brillante, hombre de acción que pasa sus días en silla de ruedas, compartiendo con Margaramaría una contradictoria relación, entre su disciplina de militantes partidistas, la hemiplejía de Gálvez y su necesidad de amar. Ella y el Autor, el mejor amigo de Galo, son también miembros del Partido. Al Autor le llaman así por su empeño en escribir la historia de sus vidas. El Autor manifiesta la crisis de identidad del intelectual ecuatoriano, desgarrado entre sus lazos culturales con Europa y sus raíces americanas. La película es una crónica sobre la "realidad" -- la del país y del Partido -- pero también nos cuenta dos historias de amor: la trágica de Gálvez y su novia, y la platónica que une al propio Autor con Rosana, mujer de un rico hacendado. Camilo Luzuriaga, responsable de La tigra hace seis años, logra la heroíca hazaña de realizar un largometraje en Ecuador. Entre Marx y una mujer desnuda es una obra ambiciosa en su reflejo de una época y unas actitudes que rehusan morir. |
BETWEEN MARX AND A NAKED WOMAN In the 60s young people thought they could change the world. At least in some parts of the world. Not exactly in Quito, Ecuador, the period in which the action is set for Between Marx and the Naked Woman. Four characters, Galo Gálvez (Arístides Vargas), his fiancée (Lissette Cabrera), the Author (Felipe Terán) and Rosana (Maia Koulieva) are torn in one of those battles between sex and politics that we got used to through the works of Lina Wertmüller. Galo is a brilliant man of action who spends his days in a wheelchair, involved with Margaramaría in a contradictory relationship, between his disciplined and militant partisanship, his paraplegic condition and his necessity to love. She and his best friend, the Author, are also Party members. The Author is called that way because of his mania about writing the story of their lives. The Author expresses the identity crisis of the Ecuadorian intellectual, split at the core between his European cultural ties and his American roots. The film is a chronicle about "reality" -- that of the country and that of the Party -- but it also tells us two angles of a love story: the tragic one between Gálvez and his loved one, and the platonic ties between the Author and Rosana, wife of a rich landowner. Camilo Luzuriaga, director of La tigra six years ago, achieves the heroic deed of making a feature film in Ecuador. Between Marx and the Naked Woman is an ambitious work in its reflection of a time and an attitude that refuse to die. |

Camilo Luzuriaga Nacido en Loja, Ecuador, en 1953. Es fotógrafo desde 1971. Fue profesor de fotografía en la Facultad de Artes de la Universidad Central del Ecuador (82-87), y desde 1994 lo es en la Facultad de Arquitectura y Diseño de la Universidad Católica. Ha dirigido varios cortometrajes. Su largometraje anterior es La tigra (90), premiada como Mejor Película y Mejor Opera Prima en el Festival de Cartagena. |
Camilo Luzuriaga Born in Loja, Ecuador, in 1953. He has been a photographer since 1971. He taught photography in the School of Arts, Central University of Ecuador (82-87) and is now professor of photography in the Architectural and Design School, Catholic University. Has directed several short films. His previous feature film is La tigra (90), recipient of the Best Film and Best Opera Prima Award in the Cartagena Festival. |
