El pueblo argentino ha creado tres mitos en el siglo XX que han traspasado las fronteras nacionales: Eva Perón, Maradona y Carlos Gardel, que resumen a la política, el deporte y el arte. Si los tres sobreviven en el futuro, está por verse, pero creo que en el caso de Gardel es casi seguro. Es como nuestro Elvis, su fama crece con los años. Aún recuerdo cuan impactante era su aparición fantasmal en el film de Solanas, Tango: El exilio de Gardel. El productor Eliseo Alvarez concibió un ambicioso tributo a Gardel que iba de un recital en el Teatro Nacional Cervantes hasta "Carlos Gardel en CD Rom". Como parte de este proyecto, tenemos al largometraje de Rodolfo Pagliere, El día que Maradona conoció a Gardel, concebido como una fábula de héroes que une a estos dos mitos de una forma muy ingeniosa. Utilizando elementos que podríamos llamar subielescos, una fuerza demoniaca encarnada en el cuerpo de una mujer, hizo a Gardel víctima de un arreglo siniestro y misterioso. El espíritu de Carlos está atrapado por un ángel del mal (Esther Goris, como el Lucis, el Angel Caído). Sólo un hombre de su fama y altura puede rescatarlo: Diego Armando Maradona. Maradona es Maradona, y no está mal (el momento en que se pregunta, "¿Y cuándo lo encuentre qué hago?" es muy simpático). Angel Rico hace una convincente caracterización de Gardel, y la utilización del material de archivo es excelente, sobre todo la música. Es un proyecto donde era sumamente fácil dar un paso en falso, pero como en la emotiva compilación de Al corazón, tiene un hechizo que nos llega. Excelente edición de César D'Angiolillo. |
The Argentine people have created three myths in the 20th Century which have gone beyond the national borders: Eva Perón, Maradona and Carlos Gardel, each respectively reflective of the country's politics, sports and arts. Whether the three will survive in the future remains to be seen, but in the case of Gardel it is almost a certainty. He is like our Elvis: his fame grows with the years. I still remember how impacting his ghostly apparition was in Solanas' Tango: The Exile of Gardel. Producer Eliseo Alvarez concocted an ambitious tribute to Gardel which went from a song recital in the Cervantes National Theater to "Carlos Gardel in CD Rom." An essential component in this project is the feature film by Rodolfo Pagliere, The Day Maradona Met Gardel, conceived as a fable of heroes to join two myths in an ingenious way. Using what we might call subielesque elements, a demoniacal force embodied in the body of a woman makes Gardel the victim of a sinister, mysterious arrangement. The spirit of the timeless singer is trapped by an angel gone astray (Esther Goris, as Lucis, the Fallen Angel). Only a man at the same level of fame and notoriety may rescue him: Diego Armando Maradona. Maradona is himself, and not bad (the moment when he asks, "And when I find him what do I do?" is quite funny). Angel Rico's characterization of Gardel is quite convincing, and the use of the archival material is excellent, especially the music. This was a project prone to go wrong, but like the emotion-laden To the Heart, it has a bewitching charm which touches us. Excellent editing by César D'Angiolillo. |

Rodolfo Pagliere Nació en Mar del Plata en 1958. Estudió Diseño en Comunicación Visual en la Escuela Superior de Artes Visuales "Martín Malharo" en su ciudad, y dirección de cine en el Instituto de Nacional de Cinematografía en Buenos Aires. Primero director de arte, y luego director de comerciales (varios galardonas en festivales internacionales) y largometrajes. Este es su tercera película. |
Rodolfo Pagliere Born in Mar del Plata in 1958. He studied Visual Communications Design in the Superior School of the Arts in his native city, and then film direction in the National Film Institute in Buenos Aires. First he worked as art director, then as director, in several commercials (many of which received international festival awards) and feature films. This is third film.
