Lola Mora es uno de esos personajes cuya vida real es un guión cinematográfico. Una notable escultora, nacida en Tucumán en 1866, llega a Roma a finales de siglo, gracias a una beca otorgada por el gobierno nacional para su perfeccionamiento. Toma clases con el prestigioso pintor Francesco Paolo Michetti, para luego pasar al estudio del afamado escultor Monteverde; con él desarrolla su talento, alcanzando pronto la fama. Luego de ganar varios concursos internacionales, los pedidos que recibe son tantos que monta su propio atelier, y se convierte en favorita de la intelectualidad europea incluyendo a D'Annunzio y Eleonora Duse. Es una mujer adelantada a su tiempo. Bisexual, termina unida a un hombre 20 años menor. Deseando triunfar en su propio país, regresa a la Argentina donde en las postrimerías del poder conservador, es duramente criticada y sus enemigos se multiplican. La fragilidad de un matrimonio con un hombre que podía ser su hijo, añadido a su esterilidad, no ayudan a Dolores Mora de Hernández, como amaba firmar sus estatuas, fuentes y túneles. Javier Torre ha hecho en Lola Mora su mejor película hasta el presente, y le ha dado a Leonor Benedetto el rol de su vida. Asistida por un reparto de veteranos (Alberto de Mendoza, Victor Laplace, China Zorrilla), la película es Benedetto, y la complejidad del rol no se le escapa. Para Torre, perteneciente a una de las dinastías fílmicas más prestigiosas de la América Latina, es el reafirmar la promesa que Las tumbas anunciaba seis años atrás. Lola Mora is one of those characters whose real-life story is a screenplay. A talented sculptress, born in Tucumán in 1866, she reaches Rome at the end of the century, through a scholarship granted by the national government for the perfection of her technique. She takes lessons with the prestigious painter Francesco Paolo Michetti, and then moves to the studio of the famous scultpor Monteverde, with him developing her talent and soon achieving considerable fame. After winning several international competitions, the commissions she receives are so many that she sets up her own atelier, and becomes the favorite of European intellectuals, including D'Annunzio and Eleonora Duse. Lola is a woman before her time. Bisexual, she ends up married to a man 20 years her junior. Wishing to make it in her own land, she returns to Argentina, where conservative power is coming to an end, and is harshly criticized by her many enemies. The fragility of her marriage with a man that could have been her son, combined with her sterility, do not help Dolores Mora de Hernández, as she loved to sign her work -- statues, fountains, tunnels. Javier Torre has made in Lola Mora his best film to date, and has given Leonor Benedetto the role of her life. Supported by a superb cast of veteran players (Alberto de Mendoza, Víctor Laplace, China Zorrilla), the film is Benedetto, and the complexity of the role is not beyond her.
