EL FUNERAL Como parte de nuestro homenaje al actor puertorriqueño Benicio del Toro, el Festival presenta El funeral. Abel Ferrara se caracteriza por su magistral uso de la violencia repentina, el retrato de la corrupción, las sombras de las calles neoyorquinas. Esta vez nos arrastra a los años 30, cuando la depresión devastaba a Nueva York. En el velorio de Johnny (Vincent Gallo), el menor de los hermanos Tempio, Ray (Christopher Walken) y Chez (Chris Penn) sienten la necesidad de vengar su muerte. Según la noche avanza, mediante los recuerdos de Ray y Chez vivimos el pasado de la familia, sus negocios y la sangre derramada. Aunque muy apegados, los tres hermanos son muy distintos en sus personalidades, ideología política y filosofía de la vida. Ray, el más fuerte, racional y cruel de los tres, contrasta con el temperamental y violento Chez y el cautivador Johnny, quien simpatiza con la izquierda. Las mujeres en sus vidas son igualmente diferentes. Jeannette (Annabella Sciorra), la esposa de Ray, educada e inteligente, expresa sus opiniones aunque choquen con las del marido. Clara (Isabella Rossellini), casada con Chez, es callada, sensible y sufrida. La tímida Helen (Gretchen Mol) es la bella novia de Johnny. La película gira alrededor del misterio del asesinato de Johnny. El sospechoso principal es Gaspare Spoglia (Benicio del Toro, en una impresionante caracterización), cuya mujer había estado abiertamente vinculada con Johnny. Sin embargo, al descubrirse el verdadero asesino, nos lleva a examinar la carga de los lazos familiares, qué constituye justicia, y hasta dónde puede terminar el legado del mal tras generaciones de violencia. |
THE FUNERAL As part of our homage to Puerto Rican actor Benicio del Toro, the Festival presents The Funeral. Abel Ferrara is known for his masterful use of sudden violence, the portrayal of corruption, shadows lurking along New York streets. This time, he takes us to the 30s, when the Great Depression devastated the Big City. During the funeral of Johnny (Vincent Gallo), the youngest of the Tempio brothers, Ray (Christopher Walken) and Chez (Chris Penn) feel the urge to avenge his death. As the night wears on, through the memories of Ray and Chez we live the family saga, its business and bloodshed. Even though very closely knit, the three brothers could not be more different in their personalities, politics and outlook on life. Ray, the strongest, more rational and cruel of the three, draws a sharp contrast with the temperamental, violent Chez and the charming, left-leaning Johnny. The women in their lives are also worlds apart. Jeannette (Anabella Sciorra), Ray's wife, is a sharp, educated woman who belligerantly expresses her views, even if they clash with her husband's. Clara (Isabella Rossellini) is quiet, sensitive and stoic. The shy, beautiful Helen (Gretchen Mol) is Johnny's fiancée. The film revolves around the mystery of who shot Johnny. The prime suspect is Gaspare Spoglia (Benicio del Toro, in an impressive characterization), whose wife had been openly involved with Johnny. However, when the murderer's true identity is found, we are forced to examine the burden of family ties, what in fact is real justice, and how feasible it is to put an end to a legacy of violence after generations have made it a tradition. |

Abel Ferrara Nació en el sur del Bronx, Nueva York, en 1951. Realizó sus primeras obras en Super 8 en la escuela superior, con su frecuente colaborador Nicholas St. John. Ha dirigido para la televisión, incluyendo episodios de "Miami Vice" y "Crime Story". Sus otros largos incluyen Driller Killer (79), Ms 45 (81), Fear City (85), China Girl (87), Cat Chaser (89), King of New York (90), Bad Lieutenant (92), Body Snatchers (93), Snake Eyes (93), The Addiction (94). |
