DESNUDO CON NARANJAS Hace seis años tuvimos la oportunidad de presentar la película venezolana Jericó, ambiciosa producción histórica que revelaba un increíble talento en Luis Alberto Lamata. Su poder narrativo y su uso de las imágenes es genuinamente prodigioso -- sobre todo si consideramos las realidades presupuestarias del cine en Venezuela (o en prácticamente toda Latinoamérica). Ahora Lamata nos presenta su segundo largometraje, aún más ambicioso, sin que los pocos recursos disponibles hayan mermado los altísimos valores de producción. Y de nuevo tenemos una película de época, en un período crítico de la historia venezolana (la Historia fascina a Lamata; fue su concentración universitaria), pero aquí el tono es más de leyenda, de los mitos caribeños y como éstos afectan la vida de dos seres. Partiendo de "El diablillo de la botella", cuento de Robert Louis Stevenson, Lamata nos trasplanta a mediados del siglo XIX en medio de una revuelta civil, y nos presenta a un hombre y una mujer. El es un indio alistado en el Ejército Liberal que huyendo por su vida, la encuentra a ella, blanca, muda, y hambrienta. Se crea entre ellos un vínculo misterioso y juntos vagan por el Caribe, buscando una nueva vida. En las manos de él cae un "bilongo", extraño objeto mágico que ayuda en los juegos de azar, pero a cambio de entregar el alma al diablo. La fortuna ríe, pero las noches traen el miedo, porque el diablo siempre cobra. Unido a todo esto, un extraño sueño de pinturas y naranjas, y un amor, que casi sin percibirse se hace más fuerte en la pareja. Esta es una película maravillosa, y Lamata un gran narrador de historias. |
NUDE WITH ORANGES Six years ago we had the opportunity of presenting the Venezuelan film Jericó, ambitious historical production which revealed the incredible talent of Luis Alberto Lamata. The strength of his narrative and his use of images are prodigious -- especially if we take into account the budget realities of Venezuelan (or for that matter, Latin American) filmmaking. Now Lamata has made his second feature, even more ambitious, and production values so high we wonder how he managed to deal with the inevitable low budget. And again we have a period film, set in a critical time in Venezuelan history (history fascinates Lamata; it was his college major), but here the tone is more legendary, revolving around Caribbean mythology and how it affects the lives of the two leading characters. Inspired by "The Devil in the Bottle," short story by Robert Louis Stevenson, Lamata transports us to mid XIX Century, right into a violent civil war, and introduces us to a man and a woman. He is an Indian enlisted in the Liberal Army who running for his life, finds her, a white, silent, hungry woman. A strange, instant link develops between them, and together they roam through the Caribbean, in search of a new life. In his hand falls a bilongo, strange magical object which makes him win in games of chance, but torments him day and night fearing for his soul, because the devil always collects from his debtors. As a backdrop to all this, a strange dream of paintings and oranges, and an ever growing love joining the couple. This is a marvelous picture, and Lamata a great storyteller. |

Luis Alberto Lamata Nació en Caracas, en 1959. Estudió Historia y desde muy joven escribe para el cine y la televisión. Ha dirigido varias telenovelas de éxito internacional, entre ellas Cristal. Filmó varios largometrajes dramáticos en video, y dos cortometrajes para cine, antes de estrenar Jericó (90), su primer largometraje. Esta es su segunda película. |
Luis Alberto Lamata Born in Caracas in 1959. Studied History and from a very early age has been writing for film and television. Has directed several internationally successful soap operas, among them Cristal. Made two feature-length dramatic videos and two film documentaries before the release of his first feature, Jericó (90). This is his second feature film. |
