BREAKING THE WAVES Bess (Emily Watson), a young, innocent woman who thinks she can speak with God, lives in a Scotland town where the Calvinist elders set the rigorous moral rules. Bess falls in love with Jan (Stellan Skarsgard), a worker in a nearby oil-rig, and they marry against the wishes of the townsfolk. The newlyweds are deliriously happy until the time comes when Jan must go back to work, and their separation nearly drives Bess to madness. She prays for her loved one to return, but her prayers are answered by an explosion which brings back a paralyzed Jan. Bess cannot understand that the wonderful man who showed her the ways of love and passion will not be the same ever again. She cares for him with saintlike devotion, but at the same time experiences a sort of martyrdom. The couple tries to adapt to their horrible new reality, but neither can really let go of the other, and their relationship takes on a sickly hue. The story sweeps us toward the shocking outcome, which will touch deep chords in each of us. Lars von Trier Nace en Dinamarca en 1956, y comienza a realizar cortos a los 13 años. Estudia en la Escuela de Cine Danesa, ganando un premio por película allí hecha en el Festival de Munich. Dirige comerciales, vídeos musicales y programas televisivos, incluyendo la popular serie "El reino". Su largometraje Europa (91) ganó varios premios, entre ellos el Premio Especial del Jurado en Cannes. Sus otros largos: El elemento del crimen (84), Epidemia (87), The Kingdom (94). |
Lars von Trier Born in Denmark in 1956, he began making short films at 13. While studying at the Danish Film School, every film he made won the Best Film Award at the Munich Film Festival. He directed several commercials, music videos and television programs, including the popular series The Kingdom. In 1991 he won the Cannes Special Jury Prize, among many other awards, with his feature Europa. His other features are Element of Crime (84), Epidemic (87), The Kingdom (94) and Breaking the Waves (96). |
