BASQUIAT La corta, tumultuosa vida del pintor Jean-Michel Basquiat, su meteórico ascenso a la fama y su trágica muerte a los 27 años de una sobredosis de heroína, recreada en celuloide por un íntimo amigo del artista. En grandes pinceladas conocemos al Basquiat bohemio, enemigo de la sociedad de la clase media burguesa; sus comienzos como artista de graffiti bajo el pseudónimo "Samo"; su fascinación con la subcultura de las drogas; su repentino estrellato; su amistad con Andy Warhol; y su atormentada relación con su madre, paciente mental que reside en un convento. Exitoso debut como realizador del pintor Julian Schnabel, quien nos proyecta la vida y época del excéntrico artista a quien el New York Times llamara "el James Dean del mundo del arte". Apoyado por un reparto fabuloso, Schnabel retrata el conflicto entre un genio rebelde incomprendido y la sociedad materialista que le rodea en el muy singular mundo del arte neoyorkino. Jeffrey Wright está excelente como Basquiat. Pero la película pertenece a los actores que desempeñan roles secundarios. Dennis Hopper como el comprador de arte Bruno Bischofberger está hilarante. Gary Oldman como el pintor Albert Milo y Christopher Walken como el periodista que interroga a Basquiat están soberbios. Aún así, la película prácticamente se la roban David Bowie en una brillante caracterización de Andy Warhol y nuestro Benicio del Toro como el puertorriqueño Benny Dalmau, el mejor amigo de Basquiat. Visualmente la cinta refleja el trasfondo pictórico de su director. Imágenes casi surrealistas muestran la chispa visual que alimentaba el arte de Basquiat. |
BASQUIAT The brief, tumultuous life of painter Jean-Michel Basquiat, his meteoric rise to fame and his tragically untimely death at 27 from a heroine overdose, as recreated on the screen by his intimate friend. In great strokes we get to meet the bohemian Basquiat, enemy of the middle class bourgeois; his beginnings as a graffiti artist under the pseudonym "Samo"; his fascination with the drug subculture; his sudden stardom; his friendship with Andy Warhol; and his tormented relationship with his mother, a mental patient who lived in a convent. This is the very successful opera prima of painter Julian Schnabel, who projects the life and times of the eccentric artist whom The New York Times dubbed "the James Dean of the art world." Supported by a fabulous cast, Schnabel portrays the conflict between a rebeling genius and the materialistic society surrounding him, in the very singular New York art world. Jeffrey Wright is excellent as Basquiat. But the film belongs to the actors who play the secondary roles. Dennis Hopper as art broker Bruno Bischofberger is hilarious. Gary Oldman as painter Albert Milo and Christopher Walken as the interviewing journalist are superb. Yet the film is practically stolen by David Bowie in a brilliant characterization of Andy Warhol, and our own Benicio del Toro as Puerto Rican Benny Dalmau, Basquiat's best friend. Visually the film reflects the talent as a painter of its director. Images bordering on the surreal bring us a flavor of the visual spark that fed the work of Basquiat. |
