AZUCAR AMARGA Del realizador de la lograda Sugar Hill (premiada en este Festival en el '94) nos llega un azúcar de un amargor muy diferente. Bordada sobre la rudamente deteriorada pero aún bella tela de La Habana de hoy, nos cala la romántica y desesperada historia de Gustavo (el devastador René Lavan) y Yolanda (la cubanísima belleza Mayte Vilán). Entre las ruinas de la esperanza y el amanecer del desengaño, dos jóvenes comulgan en el ardor de su pasión. Gustavo es un fervoroso creyente en la "revolución" castrista -- aplicado, entregado e idealista, pero sueña con una beca para estudiar en Europa. Su hermano Bobby (Larry Villanueva) es un rockero que toca heavy metal y se rebela contra la supresión del gobierno. Su padre Tomás (Miguel Gutiérrez), psiquiatra desconsolado por la muerte de su mujer, a duras penas logra mantener a sus hijos con su escaso sueldo, pero no por ello deja de tener un sentido muy negro del humor. En un concierto prohibido de Bobby, Gustavo y Yolanda se conocen. Ella es realista y mundana, y enseguida chocan por sus opiniones inversas sobre la política. Pero igual se enamoran, aferrándose entre sí mientras el mundo se desmorona a su alrededor. Ichaso no nos permite escaparnos de las crudezas y crueldades del diario vivir en la Cuba de hoy. Cada personaje nos mete en su realidad, confrontándonos con su visión de la vida que cada vez se hace más agobiante, más terrible en su destrucción de un bello sueño. Las imágenes en blanco y negro del cinematógrafo dominicano Claudio Chea nos impactan con una sensación de inmediacidad, de realidad de noticiero. Un regreso memorable, León. |
BITTER SUGAR From the maker of the well-done Sugar Hill (which received an award in this Festival in '94), a very differently bitter kind of sugar. Embroidered over the rudely deteriorating but still beautiful canvass of the Havana of today, we are moved by the romantic and despairing story of Gustavo (the devastating René Lavan) and Yolanda (the very Cuban beauty of Mayte Vilán). Between the ruins of hope and the dawn of disenchantment, two young lovers burn in the flame of their passion. Gustavo is a diehard believer in Castro's "revolution" -- a bright, selfless and idealistic achiever, who dreams of a scholarship to study abroad. His kid brother, Bobby (Larry Villanueva), is a rockero who plays heavy metal and protests against the government's suppressive ways. Their father, Tomás (Miguel Gutiérrez), is a disaffected psychiatrist still grieving for his dead wife, barely supporting his sons on a typically meager salary, without losing his very mordant, very black sense of humor. In an underground concert by Bobby's group, Gustavo meets Yolanda. She is realistic, streetwise, and totally opposed to Gustavo's political outlook. But they fall madly in love anyway, holding on to one another as the world crumbles all around them. Ichaso doesn't allow us to escape the crudeness and the cruelty of day-to-day survival in the Cuba of today. The characters pull us into their reality, and confront us with their vision of a life ever more overwhelming, more terrible in its destruction of a lovely dream. The black-and-white images of Dominican D.P. Claudio Chea enhance the gritty immediacy, newsreel feel of the film. A memorable return, León. |

León Ichaso Nacido en La Habana, emigró a Estados Unidos a los 14 años, donde creció en Miami y Nueva York. Comenzó su carrera en cine publicitario, hasta co-dirigir EL SUPER, ganadora en Biarritz y Manheim. Dirigió y produjo varios segmentos para "Saturday Night Live". Dirigió y escribió varios episodios de las populares teleseries "Miami Vice" y "Crime Story". Sus otros largos: El Super (79), Crossover Dreams (85), The Fear Inside (91), Zooman (95) and Sugar Hill (96). |
León Ichaso Born in Havana, he emigrated to the U.S. at 14, and grew up in Miami and New York. He began his career in advertising, until he co-directed the acclaimed feature EL SUPER, winner of the Grand Prize at both Biarritz and Manheim. He directed and produced several film segments for "Saturday Night Live." He directed and wrote several episodes for the popular television series "Miami Vice" and "Crime Story." His other features: El Super (79), Crossover Dreams (85), The Fear Inside (91), Zooman (95) and Sugar Hill (96) . |
