Al final del siglo XVIII y al principio del siglo XIX, dos jóvenes naturalistas europeos, Alexandre Von Humboldt (Christian Vadim) y Aime Bonpland (Roy Dupuis) se aventuran a través del corazón de la selva a la búsqueda del mítico río Casiquiare. Estos humanistas-demócratas, predecesores de la ecología moderna, portadores de convicciones progresistas contemporáneas, confrontarán una realidad hermosa y brutal que ellos visualizan como un viaje a través del país de las maravillas. Este recorrido los marcará para siempre y los hará descubrir la muerte, la vida y la amistad eterna. Este maravilloso film de aventuras es también una historia filosófica y ecológica con toques surrealistas, una hermosa historia de amistad y hermandad que traspasa culturas, y un espectacular fresco histórico. El realizador proyecta de manera admirable la selva venezolana con su verdor y calor tropical. Algunas imágenes recuerdan los clásicos de Werner Herzog Fitzcarraldo y Aguirre la cólera de Dios. A nivel plástico la cinta es muy hermosa. Pero donde la película se eleva a niveles altísimos es en la recreación del sentido de aventura que impulsa a los jovenes científicos. Los jóvenes actores Roy Dupuis (actuó en el film de ciencia-ficción Screamers) y Christian Vadim (hijo de Catherine Deneuve y Roger Vadim) transmiten las emociones adolescentes, auto-eróticas, ensoñadoras, temblorosas que impulsan a los europeos a aventurar en las Américas. Las ideas racionalistas del siglo XVIII confrontan la romántica idealización de la naturaleza en la jungla suramericana. Una cinta memorable en todos sus niveles: dramáticos y técnicos. |
Toward the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th century, two young European naturalists, Alexandre Von Humboldt (Christian Vadim) and Aime Bonpland (Roy Dupuis) go through the heart of the jungle in search of the mythical Casiquiare River. These democratic humanists, predecessors of modern ecology, full of progressive convictions, will face a brutal and beautiful reality which they visualize as a trip to wonderland. Their travels shall mark them forever and will lead them to discover death, life and eternal friendship. This wonderful adventure movie is also a philosophical and ecological story with surrealistic touches, a beautiful story of friendship and brotherhood which transgress cultural clashes, and a spectacular historical fresco. The filmmaker displays the Venezuelan jungle, with its lush greenery and tropical heat, admirably. Some images remind us of the Werner Herzog classics, Fitzcarraldo and Aguirre, the Wrath of God. Visually, the film is very lovely. But it excels to the highest levels in its recreation of the sense of adventure propelling these young scientists. The young actors Roy Dupuis (Screamers) and Christian Vadim (son of Catherine Deneuve and Roger Vadim) project the adolescent thrill, erotic impulses, dreamlike anticipation that pushes Europeans to venture into the American continents. The rationalistic ideas of the 18th century clash with the romantic idealization of nature as manifested in the South American jungle. A memorable film at all levels -- dramatic and technical. |
